Language Arts Syllabus
Ms. Kay's 5th period
Grading: Class Assignments: 25% Class Participation: 25%
Quizzes/Exams: 25% Homework: 25%
Class novels: We read one
or two a year. Our focus is on comprehension, predicting, summarizing, and similar
thinking skills.
Poetry: Curriculum Books have Poetry and Lessons that are interesting
for teenagers.
Short stories, newspaper, school papers, magazines, and other literature that
is meaningful to the students.
Word games to practice language and communication skills.
Writing will include the following:
Journal writing
Writing for a variety of meaningful (real-life) purposes
Poetry and Songwriting
Creative writing
Homework:
Thinking Skills worksheets: These will be for practicing a variety of skills
that range from simple review to complex thinking strategies. Homework will
be sent home most Thursdays and will be due back no later than the following
Thursday.
Read two novels throughout the year and share them with the class.
You can be creative with this sharing by using your best skills. Options to
express yourself include talking, writing your ideas, drawing, painting, drama,
etc. You can use combinations of these various skills and talents.
