ACADEMIC PLAN FOR: LANGUAGE ARTS

I. Course Description
The language arts course is designed to provide basic reading and writing
skills instruction in an individualized format to meet the needs of each student.
Students read from a variety of texts including classic literature workbooks,
serialized stories in the PI and Seattle Times and other supplemental materials.
Guided reading is used to increase comprehension and encourage higher level
reading skills. Students will also get an opportunity to learn the use of
available technology for research and to expand their own interests in literature.
II. Course Objectives*
Students will identify story elements of: plot, characters, setting, theme,
point of view, conflict, and resolution. Students will work individually and
in groups on writing conventions according to their level. Students will read
and write reports on a minimum of 2 books per semester.
*Individual IEP goals and objectives take precedence in all classes.
III. Criteria Used to determine
grades
A. Classroom participation (note: attendance is required to receive a participation
grade for that day - this cannot be "made up").
10 points per week
B. Work assignments (both in-class and homework).
C. Demonstrated ability in classroom assignments reports and projects both oral
and written.
D. Oral reading during class.
E. Tests
F. 2 Book Reports per semester - Book reports will consist of texts written
at the student's reading level. The student will be expected to read the book
and write a report using a template given by the teacher or read selections
in high-interest workbooks and answer questions.
IV. Textbook/Materials used in
class
1. Language Arts Macmillan/McGraw-Hill pub.
2. Supplemental materials provided in the form of handouts and excerpts from
books.
3. Serialized stories from the PI and/or Seattle Times
V. Special Instructions
1. Be on time to class.
2. Bring pencils, pens, writing paper and any other materials to class.
3. Be respectful of others.

VI. Class Calendar
Classroom assignments will be given each day and whatever is not completed in
class will need to be finished at home. Students are responsible for obtaining
make-up work for days absent. Students will be given assignments to work on
reading comprehension and writing skills at their own level and pace and in
coordination with their IEP goals and objectives.
Standards addressed will be: reading standards 1.1 to 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, and 3.1;
writing standards 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 3.1 to 3.4; communication standards 1.1, 1.2,
1.3 and 2.3.
